Chapter Four

Nico

The way she looked at me made me want to wrap her up in blankets and carry her across the ocean in my arms. Valentina didn’t deserve this. When she came to me first, I couldn’t even breathe. It was the last thing I expected, but her words nearly broke me.

“I was so worried about you. I knew you would think the worst, and I had no way to tell you I was okay. I love you, Nico. I love you.”

Those were words that would haunt me in my sleep. Now I stared at her as she flinched at Alessia’s “lover” comment and all I could think about was how much worse this was going to get before it ever got better.

“Can we have a minute alone?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Alessia, please,” I said and the look on Valentina’s face was just as shocked at my use of the word please as it was with the new dynamic in the room.

“Fine.” She stood making a show of twirling her dress around her body. Years ago, a movement like that would have me crawling to her on my knees, but now it was just another thing that made me sick. “I’ll give you five minutes, then meet me in our bedroom.”

Valentina let go of Dante’s hand and stepped forward, “What do you mean —?”

“Oh, nothing dear, I’m sure your men can explain it well. Now let’s say our goodbyes and remember, the offer still stands. I will always have a place for you by my side.”

Alessia pulled Valentina into her arms and placed a kiss on either cheek. By the look on her face, Valentina was equal parts confused and angry. I couldn’t blame her.

“Massimo, come. Let’s give my pet and his men a moment alone. Dante, it’s always a pleasure... and pretty boy... I wouldn’t mind having you by my side, either. Seriously Dante, where did you collect such beautiful specimens?” she asked as Ares turned his head and pulled his arm away from where she was trying to touch him.

When the door closed and it was only the four of us left, I was at a loss for words. I looked down to ensure my chest had not burst open with my lifeblood falling to the floor, because the pain was enough to believe it was true. I should have told her about my past. She deserved to know before this, but now I had mere minutes to help her understand what would happen next.

“Ragazzina, sit. Let us explain what will happen. Alessia is an impatient woman and won’t wait long for Nico,” Dante said, pointing to the door.

She took a seat next to him, but her eyes never left me. “What’s going on?”

He reached for her chin and pulled her attention to him. “Nico is staying with Alessia. We will leave and head back to our home here on the island until I finish my business with the De Bartolis.”

“Why would he stay here? Why would you stay here?” she asked, turning her attention back to me.
